The charity bee I’m involved with assigns 2 12 1/2″ squares per month. Each month a different quilter chooses the type of quilt and sends out directions to the stitchers…that’s me! September’s mission was a tree quilt. We were allowed to be as creative as possible. The only real requirement was to use Kona White as a background to the tree block. Here are my contributions:

The “Neighborhood Tree” was tricky. Well, not really, but I had to play with numbers for a while before I started cutting. I pride myself on my math ability, so I was disheartened when I feel 1/2″ short on both sides. Big bummer. So, I simply added more Kona White trim and cut to 12 1/2″ squares. I’m such a perfectionist, that I would have started over if I had enough Kona White. Alas, I didn’t…ugh! And on second thought, I really should have added a swing…double ugh.

October’s quilt is Wonky Log Cabin in purple and orange. I’ll definitely need to dig deep for purple and orange scraps. Those colors aren’t what I normally gravitate towards, but it’ll be fun. It’s great to be pushed out of my routine!

Can you say texture? This was a complete whim and I’m so glad I went with it. The biscuit patch was something I ran across in a random book teaching sewing techniques that had nothing to do with quilting. After seeing it, I couldn’t wait to apply it somehow and this vintage crib size quilt is the perfect place. I am not using sashing, so the 12 squares will be extra-large. This quilt is compiled with 10 classic squares, which are a simply made with 2 contrasting fabrics per square (I’ll refer to these 2 fabrics as a pair). I decided to take 5 fabric pairs and make 2 squares each that will be opposite of each other. The remaining 2 squares needed are checker board biscuit patch squares.

14″ Finished Classic Square Steps: Directions per 2 Square Combo. Repeat 5 times.

1. Always wash & dry your fabrics first.

2. Pick 2 fabrics that contrast yet compliment each other.

3. Compete a 4 1/2″ biscuit patch square center.

4. Cut strips.

2 1 1/2″ X 4 1/2″ Strips – Left & Right of Biscuit Patch

2 1 1/2″ X 6 1/2″ Strips – Top & Bottom of Square Patch

2 4 1/4″ X 6 1/2″ Strips – Left & Right of 1 1/2″ Strips

2 4 1/4″ X 14 1/5″ Strips – Top & Bottom of 1 1/2″ Strips

NOTE: If you don’t sew straight or appreciate wiggle room, cut your strips an extra 1/4″ wide and trim after sewn together. The goal is to complete a square that is 14 1/2″ X 14 1/2″. If you want the middle frame bigger…go for it!

5. Reconstruct another classic square using the same fabrics. Simply create an opposite square using the directions from #4.

14″ Finished Checker Board Biscuit Squares: Directions per 1 square. Repeat 2 times.

1. Pick any fabric pair.

2. Make 2 7 1/2″ biscuit patches in one fabric.

3. Make 2 7 1/2″ biscuit patches in the other fabric.

4. Arrange in a checker board pattern and sew together 1/4″ in. The completed square will be 14 1/2″ X 14 1/2″.

Next, arrange your squares. Fortunately, I’ve already done that. In fact, I’ve already sew everything together…yippy for me! Please match up and pin your seams. There is nothing worse than seams that don’t match up.

Last night I managed to finish this lovely quilting project on the commercial breaks of Fox/So You This You Can Dance. I spent 2 hours attaching binding prior to the much anticipated 7:00 o’clock hour. Oh I do love a good dance show.

I can’t believe it’s completed. Honestly I never imagined this would be done in time. This should have taken a lot longer. One week to go before the wedding and I’m finished.

Phase 1 is probably just thinking up this crazy quilt, but you get my point. I have completed the middle top of the quilt as of midnight June 3, 2009. What a task! This part was hard. Figuring out where to put what and make it flow correctly was harder than I expected. A few tries later I had it where I wanted.

Now onto the jean boarder and colorful binding.

So close I actually laid the quilt out. SO EXCITING!!! I have a vision of course. It entails two 3X3 8 1/2″ square blocks sewn together to make a very large block. One is a windmill pattern and the other is a block pattern. If the block pattern has a proper name I don’t know it. Anyway. The blocks are going on the top right of the quilt. The windmills are going on the bottom left. Balance if you will. I will somehow fill in the missing space with the random squares I have created and basic jean that I have yet to cut.

Last night was spent escaping my quilting wonderland. I ran into Pahoa with a few girlfriends of mine. Needed to do a little catch up with one long lost girl pal that now lives in L.A., CA. She skedattled this morning back to city life. Poor girl! We ate dinner at Nings, an amazing Thai food restaurant. Delicious! Another friend of mine was doing some Champagne Ponds lounging and was awesome enough to stop by for a quick hello that turned into an extra 2 for dinner. He had a buddy from Oahu with him. We had a good time for sure!

I arrived home in time to sew ribbon onto a 8.5″ X 16.5″ piece of tan khakis I found. That rectangle is still in progress as my B.Y.O.B. session resulted in an earlier than later bedtime.

So much for taking a step back yesterday. From my alarm going off at 5:20am, work out at 5:30am, Cheyenne drop off at 7:50am, work at 8:00am, Cheyenne pick up at 2:30pm, off at 4:00pm, Cheyenne’s golf lessons at 4:20pm, visiting Roslyn & new baby Teija at 6:00pm, home at 7:00pm…

Dinner and bath time somehow got accomplished but I don’t remember it. The night prior I was up till midnight sewing so at this point I was pretty much a zombie. I need sleep. This girl is no night owl!

After Cheyenne fell asleep, somewhere around 8:45pm, I snuck into the craft room. Oh yes I did. Why I don’t know. It was calling to me, but never mind taking a step back and figuring anything out. I definitely didn’t have the time or patience to deal with that. I did however manage to knock out 2 squares. This counts as 2. So there! I couldn’t help it.

She’s crafty

My mom is very crafty. She’s extremely creative, which feels like a complete understatement. She’s amazing. She has been, in a variety of different ways, trying to get me to make a quilt. Its been going in one ear and out the other. Been there. Done that. Not doing it right now!

Then she started pulling out fabric. Asking for my advice. Oh she’s clever. She knew once I looked, felt, and started creating, it was just a matter of time. She was right, yet again. I couldn’t help it. She had some pretty awesome fabric.

I picked my fabric. I cut. I pinned. I stitched. I ripped out stitches. I stitched. I ripped out stitches. I got pissed. I took a trip to Ross to purchase a sheet set (much cheaper for a backing than purchasing fabric). I got happy. I bought the batting. I puzzle fit the sheet and batting to fit my king size quilt. I pinned together. I sewed. I banned. And FINALLY, I slept under it last night. The binding is pretty sweet. I took a bunch of different fabrics and sewed them together randomly. I wish I had thought of that sooner; I could have planned on a thicker binding. Arrggghhhh…next time. All in all, I really had fun. That’s probably because I used bonded cotton batting. That’s the good stuff.

So onto my next sewing adventure. I really need a new bag and am starting that tonight. Oh, I’ve got the sewing bug and it’s sure to last.
