So here’s the deal. I have no idea what this quilt is going to end up looking like. You know when you’ve been reading up on way to many blogs and you suddenly realize you’ve been staring at your computer screen for hours. You look away and have to blink and squeeze your eyes to get the blur out. Yeah, that’s how I feel about this quilt. I’ve got a very blurry vision, but it’s something to get me started.
Here’s the plan:
1. Cut Out the Big Island of Hawaii {bought a LARGE map}
2. Applique Island
{onto? ive bought a gorgeous turquoise waterish looking fabric…but is it too literal?}
3. Pinpoint Locations {requested by proud baby daddy}
4. Hand Stitch Location Names
5. Design Locations {hand stitch or applique?}
6. Connect Locations {if i do, hand stitched trails or appliqued roads}
7. Aloha Print Boarder {no cheesiness}
8. Simple Back {one bangin fabric print}
9. Free Motion Quilt Saying, Lyrics, or Quote {or not}
10. Quilt and Finish
Does this sound like 10 easy steps? Well I can promise you it won’t be. This is going to be a lot of work and I hope I didn’t get in over my head. “IF” I can pull this off, it will be pretty killer I’m sure. And I must! It’s for a special guy near and dear to me. His beautiful wife. And their soon to be munchkin. Living in California and away from the Hawaiian culture certainly leaves a longing that can’t be replaced. It is hard to even comprehend unless you’ve grown up somewhere incredibly special and moved off into the big bad mainland. Yes, off island has its many perks, but nothing is like home. And here is their chance to show baby all the special places on the island that daddy grew up loving.
Congratulations K + C! {WISH ME LUCK}

A long time ago, when the little village they lived in was very small, a friend made a map of all the special places that she and her children went to. Fast forward 30 years, and it’s a treasure to them all–a record of time gone by. This quilt be something of the same–a treasure. I like the turquoisy-blue water! Go for it!
Awesome story! I’m so nervous about the turquoise…but I think you’re right. Thanks much!
Your quilt idea sounds absolutely amazing! I’m sure you’ll find a way to do it, and it will be a family treasure!
I sure hope so! Thank you very much…
It definitely sounds challenging but will look gorgeous when it’s all finished! I totally know what you mean about the homesickness…you never quite get over it even if you love your new home. (I’m a California native living in Kentucky of all places
Wow, that is out of your comfort zone eh? It’s good to get out and experience other places and people. But you’re right, home sick is part of that. Thank you for your sweet comment…encouragement is really appreciated at this point!
This idea is so cool. You made me Google “map quilts”. Very interesting. Have you looked at any “map quilts” images? They might give you a little inspiration. Love the idea and can’t wait to see it!
Ha, that’s awesome! Yes, I have googled “island map quilt”, “map quilt”, “island quilt”, etc. Did you find anything really cool that leans towards my direction? If so, I’d love a link. I’ve found very few images and some inspiration. I’m pretty much on my own…so here goes.
What a wonderful idea for a quilt! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
What a cool idea! I love maps on quilts + fabric… so cool.
I sure do hope so. I’m gonna give it my all & hope for the best…
