On Wednesday, I jumped ahead on my Island Trails project without showing you steps 1 & 2.  This is due to me skipping ahead without totally completing them, so naughty!  I had an unexpected day off yesterday, so heaps of projects were completed.  5 loads of laundry {washed, dried, folder, hung, and put away}, dead rat cleaned off porch, porch disinfected, dishes done, unclogged master shower drain {with wire hook…yes, i’m a badass!}, cleaned the bathroom, made a yummy lunch for the kiddos, and finished step 1 & 2.  Did I mention I had all 4 of my kids at home too?  I even managed to fit in 1 recorded show of “Say Yes to the Dress” and had dinner ready by 5:30 when the Mr. came home.  It was a honest miracle!  At 9:30 pm, I had more energy than usual.  I swear having a desk job from 8-4 everyday does nothing but help me get chubbier every year and completely wear me out for no good reason.  I need to figure out a way to incorporate more movement into my day.  It really helps me in the energy department!  Okay, back to steps 1 & 2.

1. Cut Out the Big Island of Hawaii {bought a LARGE map}

2. Applique Island

{onto?  ive bought a gorgeous turquoise waterish looking fabric…but is it too literal?}

This is the island’s reverse side, which is outlined with lite steam a seam.  It’s impossible to place it around the perimeter perfectly.  I keep it as close as possible and then trim off the excess after ironing into place.  Next, I iron into place and then zig zag stitched around the island.

And there you have it, the BIG island.  Truth be told, I am very uncomfortable about the brightness of the turquoise back ground.  Yet, I’m sort of excited about it.  Here’s my take on it: When this has happened in the past, it seems to be the feeling of being pushed outside of my comfort zone that makes me nervous.  In the end, I’m delighted and wowed.  Now to the other extreme:  When everything seems to be flowing nicely and oh so perfect, I find myself bored with the end result.  Not always.  But it has happened.  I’ve decided to go with the electric turquoise and make it work in a way that the quilt would never have been the same without it.  Yup, that’s the plan!

In other news, I’ve located transfer paper at our local fabric shop.  It’s a SHOCK!  Hope it’s what I need…it’s experimenting time for step 4!

3. Pinpoints

It’s WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced, oh goody!

Here’s what I’ve got cooking.  Island Trails is on my mind guys.  Like an all consuming thought, “CAN I DO THIS”?  I just have to continuously shrug my shoulders and think, “of course I can”!  Do you remember my plan of completion?  Well I’m on number 3 of the list.  Yup, I’ve got the pinpointed locations figured out, font and all.  They will most likely be hand stitched.  I could free motion stitch them by machine, but it won’t have the look I’m after.  At least that’s what my imagination tells me.  So I’ll play and keep you posted of course.

Cheers to works in progress.  It’s not about arriving at the destination, rather enjoying the journey right?  Maybe all that philosophical warm and fussy stuff is accurate, but this puppy has to be done by October.  I’m off to the craft store today to pick up transfer paper so I can get busy on hand stitching ALL THESE LOCATIONS!

I’ve completed my square, oh yes I did.  I’ve completed my square, how about YOU?  Aren’t we all forcing ourselves {in some way} to get everything done we’ve committed to?  For me finding the time is the biggest battle and when I do, I just love love love creating and sewing.  This month Rachel at Stitched in Color requested one giant square with ooo bubbles ooo.  Her inspiration came from “Block Party: The Modern Quilting Bee” by Alissa Haight Carlton and Kristen Lejnieks:

Inspiration

This one was complete joy.  First off, easy!  Second, open to interpretation.  Third, just plain cute as heck!  Almost always the backs of blocks are not so pretty…but not this time people.  I thought it was fun.  Fun enough to show you.

{Love} Bubble Square

{Love} Fun Back

Cute, ain’t it?  My assignment was to use Kona Moss and the bubbles are colors of the ocean.  The other squares are my bubble colors {more or less}, with their bubbles being of the same variety.  I’m excited to see how Rachel puts it all together.

Ugh, so my college education resumes in approximately 3-4 weeks.  It’s good, but sad really.  How in the world I’m I going to keep up with everything?  I’m sorry to say that I am contemplating resigning my position as a stitcher for do. Good Stitches {a Charity Bee}, at least until the school year is over.  However, I’m going to hang on as long as possible.  We’ll just have to see…

In the meantime, we had ZERO kids last night.  Do you realize the rarity of such an event?  After working all day, I got home at 4:30.  Dinner was on the stove by 5:00.  Cake was in the oven by 5:30.  Whip cream was whipped up promptly after dinner.  We ate cake.  Just us.  No kids.  No noise, except Chef Ramsey yelling at his cooking prodigies on the telly.  We slept like kings and queens without our littlest cookie monster waking me up at 1 am to snuggle.  It was nice.  Very nice.  And happily we get to do that all over again tonight….yippy!

Island Trails {WIP}

So here’s the deal.  I have no idea what this quilt is going to end up looking like.  You know when you’ve been reading up on way to many blogs and you suddenly realize you’ve been staring at your computer screen for hours.  You look away and have to blink and squeeze your eyes to get the blur out.  Yeah, that’s how I feel about this quilt.   I’ve got a very blurry vision, but it’s something to get me started.

Island Trails {that's not the LARGE map}

Here’s the plan:

1. Cut Out the Big Island of Hawaii {bought a LARGE map}

2. Applique Island

{onto?  ive bought a gorgeous turquoise waterish looking fabric…but is it too literal?}

3. Pinpoint Locations {requested by proud baby daddy}

4. Hand Stitch Location Names

5. Design Locations {hand stitch or applique?}

6. Connect Locations {if i do, hand stitched trails or appliqued roads}

7. Aloha Print Boarder {no cheesiness}

8. Simple Back {one bangin fabric print}

9. Free Motion Quilt Saying, Lyrics, or Quote {or not}

10. Quilt and Finish

Does this sound like 10 easy steps?  Well I can promise you it won’t be.  This is going to be a lot of work and I hope I didn’t get in over my head. “IF” I can pull this off, it will be pretty killer I’m sure.  And I must!  It’s for a special guy near and dear to me.  His beautiful wife.  And their soon to be munchkin.  Living in California and away from the Hawaiian culture certainly leaves a longing that can’t be replaced.  It is hard to even comprehend unless you’ve grown up somewhere incredibly special and moved off into the big bad mainland.  Yes, off island has its many perks, but nothing is like home.  And here is their chance to show baby all the special places on the island that daddy grew up loving.

Congratulations K + C!  {WISH ME LUCK}

As I’ve mentioned in past posts, I’m part of the Love group of do. Good Stitches Charity BeeLee at Freshly Pieced  was our quilter for the month of June & had us stitch hexies.  This was my first time sewing around a hexagon and I loved it.  Her instructions are perfection and so helpful.  If you love the look of these squares, I certainly urge you to give it a whirl.

My Squares:

Do you see a unified color scheme?  In no particular order, green, blue, orange, and yellow are debuted.  Too fun…

Taught to Fly

Malia and I grew up in the same town.  She was that girl who glowed, literally.  Her outer beauty is breathtaking, but nothing compared to her inner spirit.  She is special and you don’t even have to know her to figure that out.  We’ve grown up and now she’s the mommy of 4 awesome kids.  She’s got a fun blog to follow and there is nothing boring about her Maui country life.  A few days ago her spirited 9 year old daughter, Lanea, fell off a roof.  She fractured her skull and was in ICU for 2 days.  She’s been released and what a blessing.  Unfortunately, she’s been left with paralysis on the right side of her face and loss of hearing on that same side.  There are also major concerns of blindness in her right eye.  Malia is on Oahu with her today seeing specialists and I can’t get her off my heart.  So here I am writing and asking you to pray for her if you may.  All positive and healing energies are welcome towards this little girl.  She’s a dolly!

This situation reminds me of one of my all time favorite quotes:

Sooooo, I’m up to something crafty for this little munchkin.  I know nothing can completely take away pain from tradegies, but maybe I can make something that can help her smile every time she sees it.  I’m excited to start this quilt….

Lanea, we are hoping for the best and sending you lots of love!
