Invisible Zipper

I too avoided the zipper for quite a while.  Sham pillows were just so easy to make.  I suppose you may have a better way to make shams than I did, but I used quite a bit of fabric on the back overlapping panels.  Well no more.  Here’s an easy tutorial brought to you by Rachel at Stitched in Color.  I pin my zipper differently and let me tell you why.  When I iron my zipper, they have a tendency to want to roll back.  By pinning horizontally, my needle helps to hold it flat.  See?

Horizontal Pinning

Close Up of Horizontal Pin {more or less}

You should remove the pin before you sew over them, but I never do.  And so far it’s worked in my favor, but I can always hear my mother’s voice telling me over and over again, “Robin, you’re going to break my needles if you keep sewing over the pins!”  So listen to my mama, she knows best.

16 X 16 Pillow

So yet another pillow under my belt.  Oh they are so fun I tell you.  Since I mainly quilt, it’s such a refreshing treat to have a quick {and cute} project to undertake.  This is a housewarming gift for my friend Clarissa.  In a past lifetime, I was a mortgage advisor.  She came in for a consultation and that’s where our friendship started.  It was a brisk one at that.  Less than 2 years later, I moved from Colorado to Hawaii.  However, facebook helps me keep up with the latest and although we don’t keep in touch, it was important for me to gift her something as she made it to homeownership just recently.  Clarissa and hubby like black, white, red, and lime…hope I came somewhat close.

Congrats you guys….

Tears and sniffles will be present when I mail off this quilt.  It’s been a labor of pure love.  I have to thank AraJane for inspiring the border, which really makes this quilt special.  And minky, I now love you!

Baby Journey,

When I first heard of your conception, I was overjoyed.  Your mommy is my sweetest friend.  She’s been better than any best friend and close like a sister.  There’s never been a secret that she couldn’t keep or a tragedy that she couldn’t handle.  Your mommy has worked very hard in her life to provide for her family and give herself an education.  We’ve done lots of silly things together, ate many meals together, cried together, and giggled together.  She’s driven me nuts and made my day.  There’s honestly no one like her.  You are so lucky to have such a special mommy.  Be a good baby for her and here’s a little quilt to keep you snuggled throughout the night.

minky…

…it’s like a bad word in the quilting world.  Although soft and cuddly, it’s supposedly a nightmare to work with.  I can honestly tell you I completely psyched myself out when it came to quilting the “Journey Through the Forest” quilt.  I was simply determined to use minky, but after reading a few quilting blogs and tutorials I almost switched gears.  I read it pulls and stretches.  Use a walking foot.  Then I would read, don’t use a walking foot!  Instead, free motion to avoid pulling.  AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH what to do?  So I played with some minky scraps.  Free motion was not a problem, but not my favorite.  My walking foot also stitched nicely, but it was to bulky for what I had in mind.  So I decided to try my zipper foot.  Why?  Just to try it…you never know until you try right?  Well it worked marvelously.  The back of the quilt is smooth and I didn’t have one ounce of trouble.  The trick may be in the basting more than the quilting.  So, make sure to not stretch the minky back while pinning or spraying.  I pinned and although I was told to pin every 1 1/2 inches, I  pinned about every 6 inches and it was not an issue. One thing to note, I used Warm & Natural Cotton Batting.  It’s a pleasure to work with because it clings to both the top and back fabrics you’re working with, which makes the basting process a lot less difficult.  Not to mention, the sandwich holds together well while you’re quilting.

And so they are done.  Thrilled to have them mailed off yesterday while May 2011 still exists.  What a miracle!  I really loved making these squares.

Simple.

There’s been a lot of modern quilting based around bottled rainbows, so why not a box of crayons?  Melanie with Texas Freckles is our do.Good Stitches quilter for the month of May.  I love her instructions: Pick a color from the “crayon” list, make ANY 2, 12.5 unfinished squares in just that color, and you’re done.  Oh Melanie, I could kiss you!  After seeing a few creations by my fellow stitchers, I decided on a simple triangle block in turquoise.  A quick and painless project, which I need right now.  Here are a few other squares that helped me make this choice.  They are just so good!

Twee ✁cut to pieces: Grey

little cumulus: Black & White

Gosh, I fought through this month’s do. Good Stitches charity squares.  Not because I don’t love them.  I do.  Not because they were hard.  They’re not.  Ugh, why?  I honestly couldn’t tell you other than my same ol sob story, I’m busy yada yada.  Plus, they were time consuming.  I finished one square mid April and just finished the second today.  Um oops, they were due in Michigan yesterday.  WHAT A SLACKER!  In my sad defence, once I did the first one I thought, dang that took half my day.  So I just glared at my pile of scraps for the next two weeks dreading round two.  Gosh, that’s so silly.  I’m just getting back from the post office where I promptly mailed them off to Natalie with Greenleaf Goods.  I can’t wait to see the finished product.  I really really love string quilts {i prefer large scale} and the hodgepodge of color.  Mmmm yummy color!

"Love" April Springy String Blocks

So I’m guessing you may want directions.  Natalie used this tutorial to direct us.  We were to use 9 4 1/2″ squares to assemble 1 large 12 1/2″ unfinished square.  The tutorial does suggest using paper piecing and glue.  Glue?  No thanks.  So what to do?  I did cut 4 1/2″ squares out of tracing paper I found in my kids craft closet {shhhh, don’t tell}.  I lined up my middle strip and pinned with 2 pins on the top and bottom.  I then cut and placed my next strip face down onto the mid strip.  This is the only time I sew through the paper.  For all the other strips, I tuck the paper out of the way and just sew onto the next strip of fabric.  It’s just as effective and leaves just one stitching line to pull paper from.  But first, I trim my fabric down to my 4 1/2″ piece of tracing paper before I remove it.  No glue necessary.  It’s faster…trust me!  Yes I do have patience, but why spend more time then necessary on things of this nature?  I’ve got to get dinner going if you know what I mean?

I love wonky!

I’m so very happy May’s squares are nice and simple!  It’s a lovely yet busy month.  If mostestest worstest busiestest month ever is a word or words…that’s my May!

Yay for S.I.M.P.L.E.!
