K + R

Just had to share how incredibly cute my sweet-tart is.  He skedaddled to work early this morning.  Once I arrived {yes, we work together}, he snuck into my truck and left a little surprise unbeknownst to me.  Shortly thereafter, he left the shop to finish a cabinet install and sent me a text.  Wanna see?  And yes, I call him “Sweet Like Sugar,” because he truly is.

Sneaky Texty

This is what I found.  HOW CUTE IS HE?  You know, esty shops sell these burnt signs for like a million dollars.  I always wonder what crazy fool must be paying those prices.  Okay, I’ll shut-up now & just appreciate my Mr. Handy.  This is so much better than flowers, chocolate, and a dinner tab that comes right out of our joint checking account anyway.  A scrap piece of plywood and some heart is all I need.  Wait!  That’s not plywood, excuse me.  Rather, some sort of hardwood.  Maybe oak, but I can’t tell by the smell since it just smells like a house fire…ha!

Pure Sweetness! I love us too...

Thanks Sugar!  I love you endlessly…

Rachel, the originator of do. Good Stitches, is the quilter for the month of February.  She is putting together a “Punchy Wonky Star Quilt” full of red, pink, and white.  I can’t think of any better quilt & color combination for the love month of February.  Her quilt top vision was a burst of wonky star blocks.  As instructed, 1 large or mini multiple stars were on the menu.  A quick peruse through my sewing cabinet turned up a solid pink that might have been a bit too purple for the assignment.  The color is just so deep & “punchy”, I had to give it a go.  I decided to try one square & check in with Rachel to make sure it would work.  She agreed it could, with another square with the same solid background.  Fine with me!  Happy it worked out and I was able to use fabric I already had.  I had red & white too, but this is so much better.  I’ll let everybody else follow the rules…ha!

Elizabeth of Oh Fransson was our charity quilter for do. Good Stitches {A Charity Bee} for the month of January.  She instructed her stitchers (that’s me) to construct  2 mod mosaic pieces each.  If you like this technique I suggest you visit her tutorial, which is very easy to follow.  Here’s what I came up with.

1st Mod Mosaic Block

2nd Mod Mosaic Block

The Other Mod Mosaic Blocks

If I had more time, I’d make one of these quilts for myself.  Maybe I just need more practice but the two I made took a while.  Regardless, I really like this sort of quilt and it was a great change/challenge.  Thanks Elizabeth!

Our sweet Carmen celebrated her special 6th birthday yesterday.  We had a lovely party with our family & many special friends.  She has no idea how lucky she is to be loved so much.  And with that love she returns a quirkiness & sweetness unlike any other.  We love her to the moon & back.

♥ Our Muffin Face ♥

In our house, birthdays mean you get to pick your favorite dinner, choose your birthday dessert, and create your list of party guests.  Carmen chose spaghetti & meatballs, which works perfect for all type of eating preferences.  We have one grandma that is vegetarian, so she can leave out the meatballs.  Another grandma that is allergic to wheat/gluten, so I used zucchini ribbons for noodles and tortilla chip crumbs to replace the bread crumbs in her meatballs.  If everyone is happy, I’m happy.  Carmen is happy too since she also worries about all the little details of entertainment as well.  Next, she was very specific about what sort of cupcakes she wanted.  Chocolate cake, with rose pink frosting, and bright pink sugar sprinkles.  I thought, pink on pink?  That’s not gonna work?  As all good mamas should, I did it anyway.  What a shock, so totally cute!  They were a hit at her party and she also ordered them for her classmates at her school celebration.  This time I added little heart gobstoppers for the munchkins.  I couldn’t resist with all the sweet valentines decorations in abundance.  Do I dare share the most splendid & scrumptious cupcake recipe I have eaten to date?  But of course darling…

Dark Chocolate Cuppycakes & Cream Cheese Frosting

One-Bowl Chocolate Cuppycakes

3/4 c cocoa powder or special dark cocoa powder
1 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c white sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
3/4 c warm water
3/4 c buttermilk
3 TBS oil
1 tsp vanilla

350° oven
Makes 18-24 cupcakes

1. Sift all dry ingredients together in mixing bowl

2. Add everything else and mix until smooth, about 3 minutes

3. Fill cups 2/3 full

4. Bake at 350° for 15-20 min

Frosting:

1 block of cream cheese

1 stick of butter

1 tsp of vanilla

Up to 1 box of powdered sugar (to taste)

1. Blend all ingredients at room temperature.

2. Color with food coloring if desired.

3. Put into piping bag (or plastic bag) and decorate.

Now these are sinful, so I’m warning you now.  Make sure you have a lot of mouths around to help you eat them or you’ll gain at least 5lbs because you won’t be able to stop.  TRUST ME!

Happiest of Birthdays to our Sweet Carmen.  We love you mucho grande!

Did you think I came up with these recipes myself?  Oh, I so did not!  Another big thanks to Sarah.  I adore you & appreciate your willingness to help me shine in mommyhood!
